Connecting

Wherever we go in today’s world one of the first things we do is to get connected to Wi Fi. Once connected, we are able to open up virtually innumerable lines of communication and access unlimited information. Prior to the internet our access to information and communication was limited, came at greater expense, and was less timely.

The dictionary defines connecting as “joining or linking things together, especially so as to provide access and communication.” We refer to a connecting flight as one that is timed to depart just after another flight arrives so that passengers can transfer and reach their ultimate destination.

FamilySearch and other family history resources provide the technology and opportunity to access important information and communicate in ways never before imagined. Not only has it increased our ability and opportunity to connect with ancestors and descendants, but also an opportunity to connect with those on this side of the veil.

As I have been working on writing family histories for my parents, I have connected with aunts, uncles, cousins, siblings, and my immediate family. I never realized the blessings that would come into my life through these connections and the increased love and appreciation I would feel for these family members. Through my research, writing and sharing of family histories, I have come to better understand many family members, both living and deceased. I have seen strained relationships soften and witnessed others overcome their feelings of being alone and start feeling like they belong. Engaging in family history has a way of opening communication channels and blessing relationships of the living.

Another great blessing we enjoy today from FamilySearch is the opportunity to connect with ancestors because of the stories and photos others have shared. Recently, I discovered a writing by my great grandmother about her philosophies on life, written in 1941 when she was my age.  It was dedicated to her children, but I realize that Lord had plans for a much broader audience. I found great peace, joy, and inspiration as I read it and discovered that nine of the ten philosophies she shared were in line with what I have discovered and strongly adhere to in my life. I am so grateful that someone discovered and shared this special memory on FamilySearch. It helped me to connect with my great grandmother. I now look forward to the day I can meet her and we can share the wonderful lessons we learned during our journey on earth.

Finally, the greatest connection of all that comes from family history and temple work is the opportunity to attend the temple and participate in making covenants with God. What a blessing it is to be in the House of the Lord, to feel His presence and love, and to receive continued guidance. Attending the temple is truly like a connecting flight for me. I look back on where I have been and receive strength, direction, and inspiration as I connect with God. Through the covenants we make and the things we learn in the temple, we are boarding our flight to that eternal destination and set forth with sufficient fuel and sure guide to make it.  Continually connecting with the living, our ancestors and God and Jesus Christ, prepares us well for our journey here and our eternal destination. — Dave Castleton, Director- Granite Family History Center
