“I’ll Go Where You Want Me to Go” – Who Will You Take on Trek this Summer?

The youth of the Sandy Granite Stake are going on trek this summer, 20-22 June.  In preparation for the trek, the youth have been active in activities to help them prayerfully find an ancestor to they can take with them on trek.  On the ward nights at the FHC, Ron and Sherri Hicks, the trek leaders, have come to talk to the youth for a few minutes about the trek, and to encourage them to discover a pioneer ancestor.  The goal here is that the youth will hopefully understand where they came from and the things they can learn from that ancestor.  Learning about their ancestor will help them in the challenges they may face on trek.  Ultimately, they will take this ancestor on trek with them.

To help in the process, the family history consultants/council members have used a source on FamilySearch.org.  Once the individual is logged in to FamilySearch, they can click on the Family History Activities (top right, blue tab on your main page).  Scrolling down  the page to My Pioneer Ancestors, you can click on that link.  What should appear is a listing of all pioneer ancestors that traveled the plains before train travel.

To further help the youth discover and come to know their ancestors, the Sandy Granite Stake has prepared a questionnaire/handout.  Once the youth find an ancestor and begin researching them, they should really come to know them.  Items on the survey include such things as where and when they were born, age as a pioneer, what age they were when they joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint.  Additional items suggest things they can gather before going on trek.  These include pictures, skills, strengths, challenges they faced, and world events during their lives.

Perhaps the most important things they can discover about their ancestor is the relationship to them.  Exactly how are they related to their pioneer?  What traits do the youth and ancestor share?  What is the ancestor’s legacy left behind that the youth discovered that can help them?  The youth are also putting the picture and name up on the “family tree” board at the Center. –Liz Kennington
