Kay and I serve on Tuesdays from 5:00pm to 7:00pm which is usually a quiet time at the Family History Center.
One Tuesday we had a couple come in and ask for help learning more about indexing as they had to teach a lesson in their Ward the following Sunday. Kay went to help the Sister get a computer and I worked with the brother. We took about an hour learning about indexing together.
After we were done the brother asked me if I would like to know why he does Family History Work. I told him I would love to hear his story. He proceeded to tell me about his son who had recently returned from his mission and developed an advanced case of Leukemia and passed away rather quickly. He said how bad that had rocked their world. After a while they received a prompting that they needed to get back to doing their Family History. They had submitted several names to the Temple for the work to be done. One night they got a call from one of their sons who told them that while he was in the Temple their son, his brother that died, had come to him and asked if he would tell his Mom and Dad to keep doing Family History as he was having a lot of success teaching the people they were finding.
We both had tears in our eyes as the Spirit testified to us that this work brings us closer to the veil than anything else we can do in this world.
I testify that I have felt closer to our Father in Heaven as I have learned about my ancestors. It has given me a stronger desire to stay strong in the Gospel and close to my Savior.
