I love the month of July! Early in the month we have the opportunity to learn about the foundation of the United States of America and the sacrifices and contributions made by men and women in the founding of America. Later in July we recognize and honor those pioneers who endured challenges and tribulation to establish the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints upon the earth. As we read their stories we can’t help but be moved by their love and devotion to God and to one another. The testimonies and faith of these early members live on as we read their stories and learn of their devotion.
Sometimes when we honor our early pioneers and founding fathers of this country, we fail to recognize the pioneers of recent times. Their love, devotion, and commitment, to the gospel of Jesus Christ is just as valuable today as those who have gone before. The pioneers of more recent times are making a difference to the Church of Jesus Christ, in their own families, communities, and countries. As we read their stories and learn about their lives we are inspired and blessed with examples of how to be a pioneer today.
A short time ago the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints created a link on ChurchofJesusChrist.org to resources that explore the contributions of early pioneers and recent pioneers of this last dispensation. The stories are inspiring and give us a more expansive view of who the pioneers were in the early restoration of the church, and the pioneers today. Perhaps you are a pioneer today and will be able to see yourself in these stories.
Whether you are a recent convert or have a rich heritage of ancestors who were Latter-day pioneers, there is much we can do to bring that pioneering spirit into our lives and the lives of others as we participate in temple and family history work.
