The Spirit of Elijah

Preparing in a Pandemic

Over the past few weeks there has been much in the media about preparing for the return to school in light of the pandemic. A lot of thought and planning have gone into preparing the physical facilities, administration, teachers, and students, to insure that the learning environment this fall will be both meaningful and safe.

Over the past couple of months we have all taken many precautions and done things substantially different in order to protect ourselves and those around us from the deadly coronavirus. Last year at this time I never dreamed I would be wearing a mask, washing my hands dozens of times a day, avoiding crowds, worried about touching any surface outside my home, or ordering most everything we need online. Each day I take precautions designed to provide protection from this deadly virus.

Just as dangerous, yet often overlooked, are the temptations of Satan and the false doctrines he disseminates. The moral degradation, the caustic nature of human discourse, and the prevalence of philosophies and practices hostile to God’s plan, have made the world a dangerous place for us and our families. We have been counseled and warned by our prophets, not only of the storm, but of things we can do to prepare for and weather it successfully.

In an October 2011 general conference talk Elder Bednar invited all members, but particularly the young people, to learn about and experience the Spirit of Elijah. With that invitation, came the following promises:

  • Your love and gratitude for your ancestors will increase.
  • Your testimony of and conversion to the Savior will become deep and abiding.
  • You will be protected against the intensifying influence of the adversary.
  • You will be safeguarded in your youth and throughout your life.

In the October 2012 General Conference Elder Scott suggested family history and temple work as a “sure way to eliminate the influence of the adversary in your life.” President Nelson in April 2020 General Conference invited us to increase our participation in family history and promised “that as you increase your time in the temple and family history work, you will increase and improve your ability to hear Him.”

As you prepare for the new school year, don’t forget the spiritual preparation and the blessings promised to those engaged in family history. Notwithstanding the fact that the Granite FHC is not currently open, much can be done in your home through today’s technology. Reach out to your ward consultants or contact the FHC through the website to let us know your needs and desires and we will provide you with the help you need to participate in family history and enjoy the associated blessings and protection.–Dave Castleton, Director, Granite Family History Center
