Social Media and Family Research

You probably have some favorite family history and genealogy research sites that you use regularly, I know I do. While I love these resources and feel competent in using them, I decided it was time to try something new. I set a goal to learn about, and use resources available on social media to help me as I work on my Family History.

I decided to start with the Granite Family History Center website, a resource that I have used often. On this website, I clicked resources, then, Videos & Tutorials. Here an index of helpful videos appears. I found a video of a class that had been taught at the Granite Family History Center called; Social Media & Family History. I opened the link and watched the video. The class instructor took me, the viewer, through numerous resources available on social media, and how to use them effectively.

The main links the instructor on the video used were found on The Family History Guide, Project 7, goal 3; Social Media. If you are interested in learning how to use different social media platforms to help you with your family history, you will learn about them here. These are some of the social media options you will learn about:

  • Google
  • YouTube
  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Pinterest
  • Instagram

As you watch the video at the Granite Family History Center, and use The Family History Guide lessons you will be able to learn how to use these social media resources, and possibly find information about your family that has eluded you. Happy hunting! –Elaine Hardman
