In the book, “The Holy Temple,” by Boyd K. Packer, as first published in 1980, Elder Packer addresses the skepticism he encountered by others regarding the need to provide temple ordinances for the entire human family. To the claim, “That is impossible,” Elder Packer responded, “Perhaps, but we shall do all that we can do.” Then he explained:
“And once again we certify that we are not discouraged. We ask no relief of the assignment, no excuse from fulfilling it. Our effort today is modest indeed when viewed against the challenge. But we have come to know that our accomplishments, so far as they have gone, have been pleasing to the Lord. We do not suggest that the size of the effort should be impressive, for we are not doing nearly as well as we should be. But already we have collected hundreds of millions of names, and the work goes forward in the temples and will go on in other temples that will be built.”
“Those who thoughtfully consider the work inquire about those names that cannot be collected. ‘What about those for who no record was ever kept? Surely you will fail there . . ..’ To this I simply observe, ‘You have forgotten revelation. . . Revelation comes to individual members as they are led to discover their family records in ways that are miraculous. . . . When we have done all that we can do, we shall be given the rest. The way will be opened up.”
It is interesting to note that at the time Elder Packer first published this book there were only 19 temples in operation in the whole world. Computer based research and the sharing of family trees through FamilySearch and other programs were not even contemplated. Understanding the circumstances existing at the time help us to recognize Elder Packer’s amazing confidence and faith in the work of providing temple ordinances for the entire human family. His words are inspiring and reveal the significant impact of revelation in this work.
With the many advancements that have occurred and the number of temples that have been added in the past 40 years, we are modern witnesses to the impact of revelation. Today we recognize advancements not even dreamed of before. We now look forward from new heights anticipating additional revelation and inspiration that will continue to miraculously move this work forward. Our task in 2022 has not changed. We simply need to do all that we can do, knowing that we will be given the rest!
